European journalists fear for the future of traditional media
The emergence of social and digital media and the economic crisis have had a huge impact on the way journalists in Europe now work. That is the conclusion of ‘The European Digital Journalism Study’, a recent pan-European survey. Some 350 journalists from the traditional media (TV, radio, and the national, regional and specialised press) in the Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden and the UK took part in a survey on the changes in the working methods of journalists in the digital era. A third of the journalists believe that their traditional media channel will disappear whereas 20% say that has already happened with their publication.
The study includes another striking conclusion: 60% of journalists think the print media will experience a sharp decline. In Sweden, Germany and the UK, this percentage is even higher. Moreover, over half of the participants say that the online alternative media are still far from being profitable as a ‘business model’. In short, this is a rather pessimistic vision, one that appears to be backed up when it comes to the quality of journalism: 54% of journalists think that this quality will be negatively affected due to the lack of editorial resources.
Thankfully, it is not all doom and gloom. A quarter of the interviewees are of the opinion that the total number of media will not fall. Half of them believe that the growing number of new media will create a completely different media landscape. And there is some good news too for PR agencies, as 40% of journalists think that their dependence on the content generated by PR agencies will continue to grow.
